Westover Edges Monroe 60-53 in Thrilling Basketball Showdown
UPDATE: In a thrilling high school basketball clash, No. 7-ranked Westover narrowly defeated No. 8 Monroe 60-53 on January 5, 2024, in Albany, NY. The game was a showcase of intense rivalry and high stakes, with Westover achieving its 11th consecutive win while snapping Monroe’s impressive 10-game winning streak.
The atmosphere in the packed gym was electric, reminiscent of playoff intensity, as both teams battled for supremacy. Westover’s Jalen Holmes led the charge with 22 points, while his teammate Gregory Williams contributed 19 points. The crowd erupted as the Patriots took an early lead, but Monroe’s resilience kept the game tightly contested.
Monroe, previously ranked No. 3 in the state, showcased its potential as a serious title contender despite the loss. Brayden Burns shone for the Tornadoes, scoring 29 points, with Tristen Terry and Robert Adams adding crucial baskets. The game saw multiple lead changes, with Monroe closing the gap to just 53-51 in the final minutes, but Westover held its ground.
“Every possession felt heavier than the last,” said Westover coach Dallis Smith, who celebrated his 500th career victory that night. “Our players showed incredible poise under pressure.”

Earlier in the evening, the girls’ teams also took the court, with No. 3-ranked Monroe dominating Westover 63-31, led by Kie’Aundria Acree’s phenomenal performance of 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists.
As the night unfolded, Westover’s Sydney Donaldson made headlines by scoring 16 points and crossing the 1,000-point milestone in her career, adding another layer of excitement to the event.
Looking ahead, Westover will host Dougherty on Tuesday, January 9, while Monroe travels for its next matchup. Both teams are expected to continue their pursuits toward the state championship, setting the stage for more thrilling encounters in the coming weeks.
