Vallejo School District Hosts Urgent Town Hall Amid Closures
UPDATE: The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) is taking urgent steps regarding its multi-year school closure and consolidation plan, hosting a pivotal town hall at Jesse Bethel High School on October 18, 2023. This meeting marks the start of a critical series aimed at addressing pressing concerns over overcrowded classrooms and insufficient resources.
At this first of three town halls, district leaders emphasized the need for community input while fostering a collaborative spirit among parents, teachers, and students. VCUSD Superintendent Rubén Aurelio stated, “This is a chance to come together, discuss the realities we face, and create solutions that put students first.”
Attendees included passionate representatives from Steffan Manor Elementary School and John Finney High School, with student trustee Zanyah DeLeon advocating for the needs of students impacted by the proposed school consolidations. DeLeon pressed for the necessity of transitional support as the district navigates potential closures, aiming to ensure that students feel secure during this challenging time.
Parents voiced their deep concerns regarding the looming changes. Paris Velasquez, a parent of two, raised questions about the support structures for families during potential transitions. “If Steffan Manor were to close, are they going to help with that transition?” she asked, emphasizing her desire for her children to feel comfortable regardless of the changes ahead.
Longtime educator Lori Tackmire highlighted the logistical challenges that could arise from poorly managed school consolidations, warning of potential overcrowding and strains on faculty resources. “We need to ensure that transitions are handled properly to prevent further issues,” she stressed.
Despite the weight of the issues discussed, a sense of optimism permeated the room. Velasquez noted a shift in tone compared to previous meetings, stating, “This time around, it was more of ‘let’s fight together to make sure whoever it is facing consolidation or closure gets the support.’”
Sophia Robinson, a teacher at Pennycook Elementary School, echoed this sentiment, advocating for a “growth mindset” in the face of uncertainty. “The only way to embrace change and grow is to have a forward-thinking perspective,” she remarked.
The VCUSD board has set a timeline for final decisions regarding closures and consolidations by December 17, 2023, with anticipated changes taking effect in the 2026–2027 school year. The next town hall is scheduled for October 20, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., although the location remains to be announced.
