BREAKING: USC women’s basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb is calling for urgent action after a tragic shooting at her alma mater, Brown University, on December 9, 2023, that left 2 students dead and 9 others injured. Speaking just after her team’s defeat to the top-ranked UConn Huskies, Gottlieb confronted the issue head-on during a post-game news conference at the Ivy League school.

“It’s the guns,” Gottlieb declared, emphasizing the need for change in a country where such violence is alarmingly common. Her voice trembled as she recounted receiving “a million text messages” from former teammates who were affected by the chaos that erupted during final exams. “Parents should not have to be worried about their kids,” she added, expressing deep concern for those with children at the university.

The shooting unfolded around 11:00 AM at Brown, where students were taking exams. A gunman opened fire, prompting a lockdown that trapped students and faculty in classrooms and dorms throughout the night. Oscar Perez, the Providence police chief, confirmed that a person of interest in his 20s is in custody, although no charges have yet been filed as the investigation continues.

Gottlieb, a graduate of Brown in 1999 and a former member of the women’s basketball team, shared that one of her former teammates was en route to Providence to support her daughter, who had taken shelter in the library’s basement. “It’s a tragedy that no university community is ever ready for,” said Christina Paxson, president of Brown University, in an email to alumni.

In response to the shooting, Brown University has canceled all remaining classes and exams for the fall semester. The emotional toll on the community is immense, with many still reeling from the shocking events. “Hopefully, everyone is safe and praying for peace for those that have lost people,” Gottlieb stated, highlighting the urgent need for compassion and solidarity.

As law enforcement continues to search for additional evidence, the university community is left grappling with the aftermath of this senseless violence. This incident raises critical questions about gun safety and the necessity for reform in America, a sentiment echoed by Gottlieb’s poignant remarks.

The developments are ongoing, and the impact of this tragedy will resonate far beyond the university. As the search for answers continues, the focus remains on supporting those affected and advocating for change in a broken system.
