Safe Space Winter Shelter Launches Urgent Winter Program Today

UPDATE: The Safe Space Winter Shelter is kicking off its vital winter program TODAY, set to run from December 21 to March 1. This year, the nonprofit is expanding its services with extended morning hours at a new drop-in center, responding to the urgent needs of the homeless community in Chico.

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., individuals in need can gather at the nonprofit’s office located at 1909 The Esplanade. A shuttle will transport them to one of five partner churches, including Chico First Baptist Church and Hope Commons Church, where they can stay warm overnight.

Chrissi Overlock, the Shelter Operation Coordinator, emphasized the importance of this year’s extended hours. “Guests can stay warm indoors from 5:30 p.m. until noon the next day, which will hopefully make people’s mornings easier and keep people warmer,” she stated during a recent interview.

After a night at the shelter, guests are encouraged to utilize the Radical Resilience program at the nonprofit’s office from 8 a.m. to noon. This initiative offers essential services such as snacks, charging stations for devices, restroom access, and one-on-one case management to help individuals navigate their challenges.

The need for such support is more critical than ever. Overlock noted that many individuals experiencing homelessness are often displaced by police and struggle to meet with case managers. The Radical Resilience program provides a stable environment where they can receive assistance without fear of being told to leave.

Safe Space’s new office, opened in October 2024, features upgraded facilities, including dedicated spaces for full-time case managers and a communal area where guests can relax, enjoy hot meals, and access hygiene supplies. “It’s a place where guests can come; they’re not being told they have to go,” Overlock explained, highlighting the importance of creating a welcoming environment.

The winter shelter operates entirely on volunteer support, which Overlock described as “the heart of its organization.” Importantly, the shelter has no sobriety requirements, allowing couples to stay together and accommodating pets in limited numbers.
