Jennifer Lawrence Reveals Why She Avoids Political Commentary
UPDATE: Actress Jennifer Lawrence has just revealed her reasons for avoiding political commentary, stating it could “add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the country apart.” In a candid interview on The New York Times podcast “The Interview” aired on October 17, 2025, Lawrence expressed her concerns about the divisive political climate in the United States.
In her discussion with host Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Lawrence reflected on her experience during Donald Trump’s first term, describing it as overwhelming. “I felt like I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off,” she stated. She emphasized that celebrity opinions do not influence voter behavior, saying, “Election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for.”
Lawrence, who was previously an outspoken critic of Trump, acknowledged her hesitation to engage in political discussions. “I don’t want to turn people off to films and to art that could change consciousness or change the world,” she explained. “If I can’t say something that’s going to speak to some kind of peace or lowering the temperature, I don’t want to be a part of the problem.”
The actress, known for her roles in films like “Hunger Games,” also shared insights into her creative process, indicating that her upcoming projects will reflect her political beliefs. “I try to express my politics through my work,” she stated, mentioning films from her production company that tackle significant issues, including “Bread and Roses,” which explores the plight of Afghan women during the Taliban’s resurgence, and the abortion documentary “Zurawski v. Texas.”
Lawrence’s comments come as artists face increased scrutiny over their political stances. “You watch these actors’ faces who have had incredible careers and then one half of the internet doesn’t want to see their face anymore,” she lamented, expressing concern for her colleagues.
Reflecting on her past political expressions, Lawrence humorously noted, “I regret everything I’ve ever done or said,” highlighting the evolving nature of public discourse. She concluded by acknowledging the heightened stakes of the current political landscape, stating, “The second term feels different. We knew what he did for four years. He was very clear.”
As the political climate continues to shift, Lawrence’s approach to her craft and political expression remains a topic of interest. Stay tuned for more updates on her upcoming projects and public statements.
