UPDATE: Iran’s government-imposed internet blackout has now entered its second day, causing significant disruption as nationwide protests continue to escalate. The turmoil comes as Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran’s last shah, has called for a critical two-day strike starting Saturday, targeting key sectors like transportation and energy.

In a compelling video address shared on X, Pahlavi urged “workers and employees in key sectors of the economy” to participate in the strike to amplify the ongoing unrest that has gripped the nation for over 10 days. He emphasized the need for demonstrators to take to the streets with flags and national symbols, aiming to “reclaim public spaces” and “prepare to seize city centers.”

As Pahlavi rallies support from abroad, the situation remains tense on the ground. The internet blackout, now confirmed by watchdog group NetBlocks to have lasted 36 hours, was enacted following mass protests in Tehran. The organization reported at 11:30 PM ET that the blackout severely limits the ability of Iranians to communicate and check on loved ones, exacerbating fears amid the unrest.

“It’s now 8:00 AM in #Iran where the sun is rising after another night of protests met with repression,” NetBlocks stated in a Telegram update. The disruptions come after widespread demonstrations erupted on December 28, stemming from public frustration over soaring inflation and discontent with Iran’s conservative leadership.

The protests reflect a significant moment in Iran’s recent history, echoing sentiments from the 1979 Islamic Revolution that ousted Pahlavi’s father. While the exiled opposition leader’s popularity within Iran remains uncertain, his call for action has garnered attention, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

As protests continue, observers are focused on the government’s next steps and the potential for further escalation. With the strike set to begin soon, all eyes will be on Iran as citizens respond to Pahlavi’s plea for solidarity against the regime.
