Former NFL Star Randy McMillan Passes Away at 67

Former NFL running back Randy McMillan has passed away at the age of 67, as confirmed by the Indianapolis Colts. McMillan, who was selected 12th overall in the 1981 Draft by the Baltimore Colts, quickly established himself as a promising talent in the league. His debut against the New England Patriots showcased his abilities, as he rushed for an impressive 146 yards and scored two touchdowns, leading his team to a thrilling 29-28 victory.

McMillan’s career spanned six years, all with the Colts, who later relocated to Indianapolis in 1984. He was a key player during the team’s early years in their new city, leading the team in rushing yards from 1984 to 1986. His contributions during this transitional period solidified his status as a central figure in the franchise’s history.

Tragedy struck in April 1987 when McMillan was involved in a serious accident. After a night out, he was struck by a car near his home in Maryland, resulting in severe injuries. He described the aftermath, stating he had shattered both bones in his leg and required plastic surgery on his face. This incident effectively curtailed his NFL career at just 28 years old, despite his determination to recover and return to the field.

After being released prior to the 1988 season, McMillan had a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins but did not find the success he had hoped for. His challenges continued in 2002 when he suffered a significant spinal injury from a car crash, further complicating his recovery and mobility.

Despite these hardships, McMillan remained resilient. He once remarked, “The injury has been an eye-opener for me. But I take on the challenge.” Over the course of his NFL career, he amassed 3,876 rushing yards and scored 24 touchdowns, along with 164 receptions.

The Indianapolis Colts released a statement expressing their condolences, highlighting McMillan’s significant impact during the team’s formative years in Indianapolis. “McMillan burst onto the NFL scene in 1981 and spent his entire six-year career with the franchise. His impact during our early years in Indianapolis will not be forgotten,” the team stated.

The announcement of McMillan’s passing comes shortly after the Colts concluded their season with a defeat against the Houston Texans. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
