Crockett Dominates Boone 24-7 in Thrilling Musket Bowl Showdown
URGENT UPDATE: David Crockett decisively defeated Daniel Boone 24-7 in the highly anticipated Musket Bowl on the night of October 20, 2023. Quarterback Zeke Slone shone brightly, rushing for two touchdowns and throwing a critical 12-yard touchdown pass to Chace Taylor.
The Pioneers’ victory boosts their record to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in Region 1-3A, while Boone falls to 1-8 and 1-3 in the region.
In a game filled with intensity, Jaxon Overstreet set the tone early, catching a stunning 66-yard pass from AJ Wynn that placed Crockett on the Boone 1-yard line. Slone capitalized on this momentum, scoring just three minutes into the first quarter to give Crockett a 7-0 lead with 3:06 left in the first quarter.
Boone’s Drew Fleming responded with a powerful 22-yard touchdown run at 7:51 in the second quarter, tying the game with Andrew Louter’s successful PAT kick. Remarkably, Fleming, who had separated his shoulder just a week prior, managed to rush for over 100 yards in the first half alone.
However, Crockett regained control just before halftime. With only 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Slone executed a brilliant play, faking a handoff and connecting with Taylor in the end zone, putting Crockett ahead 14-7.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 17-7 with 5:05 left in the third quarter, thanks to Ruben Ibarra-Flores’s impressive 42-yard field goal. Slone capped off the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, solidifying the victory.
This win secures Crockett the third seed for the upcoming playoffs, provided Sevier County does not lose to Morristown West. Looking ahead, Crockett will host Cocke County next Friday, while Boone prepares to face Tennessee High.
The Musket Bowl victory not only highlights the skill and determination of the Pioneers but also showcases the resilience of Boone’s players like Fleming, who fought through injury to contribute significantly. The excitement from this matchup will undoubtedly resonate as both teams gear up for crucial games ahead.
