Aztecs Face Wyoming in High-Stakes Showdown Today at 4 PM
UPDATE: The San Diego State Aztecs are set to put their impressive five-game winning streak on the line against the Wyoming Cowboys at 4 PM today at Snapdragon Stadium. This matchup marks Wyoming’s first-ever visit to the stadium, adding to the excitement as SDSU aims to maintain their momentum.
With a record of 6-1 and 3-0 in Mountain West (MW) play, the Aztecs are favored by 10.5 points over the 4-4 Cowboys. The temperature at kickoff is expected to be a pleasant 74 degrees, cooling to the mid-60s as the game progresses.
In a twist, starting quarterback Jayden Denegal has been listed as questionable due to a recent injury. Denegal, who left last week’s game after suffering a stinger, will be closely monitored as the kickoff approaches. The final availability report will be released at 1 PM, three hours before game time. If Denegal cannot play, backup Bert Emanuel Jr., known for his running skills, will take over, raising the stakes for both teams.
Despite the point spread, history suggests a closely contested game. The past four encounters between these teams have been decided by a mere 11 points. SDSU has triumphed in three straight matchups since a narrow 34-33 loss in 2016.
Both teams face significant challenges. Wyoming’s offense averages only 21 points per game, ranking 111th among 136 FBS teams. In contrast, the Aztecs’ defense is among the best in the nation, boasting three shutouts and ranking second in scoring defense with just 10.4 points allowed per game. Wyoming’s quarterback, Kaden Anderson, will be tested against SDSU’s formidable defensive front led by standout Trey White.
Turnovers will be critical in this matchup. Wyoming intercepted three passes last week, leading to a dominant victory over Colorado State. On the other hand, SDSU has excelled in ball protection, throwing only three interceptions in seven games.
A victory today would not only solidify SDSU’s standing but also position them for a potential showdown against Boise State in two weeks, should both teams remain undefeated in MW play. SDSU’s last 4-0 conference start came in 2016, when they claimed back-to-back championships.
As fans eagerly await kickoff, all eyes will be on the availability of Denegal and how both teams adapt to the high stakes. With the game just hours away, the excitement is palpable. Stay tuned for updates as this thrilling contest unfolds at Snapdragon Stadium.
