Former North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker has officially committed to Oklahoma State University, marking a significant move in his football career. Mestemaker, who leads the nation in passing yards this season, announced his decision to ESPN, highlighting his desire to reunite with former North Texas coach Eric Morris and the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator Sean Brophy.

Mestemaker’s breakout season at North Texas saw him lead the team to a remarkable 12-2 record, a spot in the American Conference title game, and a bowl victory against San Diego State. This impressive performance came during his first year as a starting quarterback after previously not starting a varsity game in high school. He concluded the season with a staggering 4,379 passing yards and 34 touchdowns, which has garnered attention from major NFL scouts.

Trust and Relationships Drive the Transfer

In his statement, Mestemaker emphasized the strong relationships he built with Morris and Brophy, stating, “I think Coach Morris is the best play-caller in the nation.” His confidence in Morris stems from the coach’s history of developing successful quarterbacks, including notable names like Cam Ward and Patrick Mahomes. Mestemaker expressed his belief that Morris’s insight into offensive strategy and ability to create a comfortable environment for quarterbacks will set him up for future success.

Mestemaker’s commitment is poised to play a pivotal role in Morris’s plans for revitalizing Oklahoma State football. Morris recently signed a five-year deal to take over the program after the dismissal of long-time coach Mike Gundy in September. The team has faced challenges in recent years, finishing winless in the Big 12 for two consecutive seasons and recording a dismal 1-11 record this past year.

Despite these challenges, Mestemaker is optimistic about the potential turnaround, stating, “I know Coach Morris knows there’s work to do. But he’s never shied from that.” He pointed out that the coaching staff is aware of the challenges ahead and is ready to tackle them head-on.

A Unique Journey to the Spotlight

Mestemaker’s path to this point has been anything but traditional. He acknowledged that his decision to transfer was influenced by the trust Morris placed in him, particularly given that he had not started a varsity game before joining North Texas. “To have a coach really be the first person to take a chance on me and trust me, I feel like I owe him that back in some sort,” Mestemaker remarked.

Although he considered transferring to three to five other schools, he did not take any official visits before deciding on Oklahoma State. He plans to visit the campus starting on Saturday, March 15, 2024, and noted that he has never previously been to Stillwater.

Mestemaker’s commitment to Oklahoma State represents a new chapter not only for him but also for the program. With 59 scholarship players currently in the transfer portal, the upcoming season will require significant effort to rebuild the team. Mestemaker’s enthusiasm for the new challenge reflects a shared vision with Morris and the rest of the coaching staff as they work to restore Oklahoma State’s football legacy.

As the team prepares for the future, Mestemaker’s leadership and skills will be crucial in driving the program forward. His excitement about joining Oklahoma State is evident, and he hopes his decision will encourage other talented players to consider the opportunities within the program under Morris’s guidance.
