Moon Phase Update: Waning Gibbous Illuminates the Night Sky
As of January 4, 2024, the Moon enters its Waning Gibbous phase, with approximately 98.6% of its surface illuminated. This phase follows the recent Full Moon, marking the beginning of the Moon’s gradual transition towards the New Moon. The Waning Gibbous will be visible tonight, providing a striking view for skywatchers.
Understanding the Lunar Cycle
The lunar cycle, as described by NASA, lasts about 29.5 days and encompasses several distinct phases. During this time, the Moon orbits the Earth, leading to changes in the sunlight reflected on its surface. While one side of the Moon consistently faces Earth, the intensity of the light we see varies, resulting in different appearances throughout the cycle.
The phases are categorized into eight main stages:
– **New Moon**: The Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun, rendering it invisible.
– **Waxing Crescent**: A small sliver of light becomes visible on the right side in the Northern Hemisphere.
– **First Quarter**: Half of the Moon is illuminated on the right side, resembling a half-moon.
– **Waxing Gibbous**: More than half of the Moon is lit, but it is not fully illuminated yet.
– **Full Moon**: The entire face of the Moon is bright and fully visible.
– **Waning Gibbous**: The Moon begins to lose light, starting from the right side.
– **Third Quarter (or Last Quarter)**: Another half-moon appears, but now the left side is illuminated.
– **Waning Crescent**: A thin sliver of light remains on the left before the Moon goes dark again.
