A significant rift has emerged within the Republican Party and its influential think tank, the Heritage Foundation, following a controversial podcast episode featuring Nick Fuentes, a known White nationalist. The podcast, hosted by former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, showcased a cordial discussion with Fuentes, which has sparked backlash from various factions within the conservative movement.

Critics, including prominent conservative figures such as Dinesh D’Souza and Ben Shapiro, have condemned Carlson for providing a platform to Fuentes, who has made inflammatory statements regarding Adolf Hitler and has a history of promoting racist and antisemitic rhetoric. The backlash intensified due to the podcast’s focus on criticism of Israel and mockery of Christians who prioritize support for the Jewish state.

Despite the criticism, Kevin Roberts, President of the Heritage Foundation, defended Carlson, arguing that the backlash against him and Fuentes undermines the fight against censorship and “cancel culture.” In a statement that has since garnered over 24 million views on social media, Roberts asserted, “Christians can critique the state of Israel without being antisemitic.”

Internal Strife at Heritage Foundation

The response to Roberts’ defense has been swift and damaging. Current and former employees of the Heritage Foundation have expressed deep frustration and a lack of confidence in his leadership, describing the situation as an “absolute chaos.” According to staff feedback, around 85% are reportedly discontented with the current leadership direction.

In a series of internal messages reviewed by CNN, employees described a workplace in turmoil, with one senior staff member stating, “It is open rebellion, it is disgust.” Others conveyed their disappointment, with comments like, “This crap is really hurting Heritage,” highlighting the sense of urgency and unrest within the organization.

This turmoil has reportedly led to an increased unease among donors, and some staff members characterized morale as the lowest in years. The controversy has revealed a broader identity crisis within the Heritage Foundation, particularly between traditional policy experts and newer political operatives brought in under Roberts’ leadership since 2021.

Influence of Fuentes and Internal Division

Fuentes has long sought to disrupt the Republican Party from within, explicitly stating, “We want disruption, we want chaos, we want infighting.” His growing influence has raised concerns about the future direction of the GOP, especially in light of recent events following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The controversy surrounding Fuentes has magnified divisions within the party, as some leaders, like Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, have publicly criticized Carlson’s approach. Cruz stated that failing to denounce those who promote hateful ideologies makes one “complicit in that evil.”

The situation has escalated to the point where even Laura Loomer, a far-right provocateur, warned that the GOP is “imploding” over Fuentes and engaged in a “power struggle” over the future of the party. Loomer characterized Carlson as a “poison pill” for the GOP, suggesting that his actions could jeopardize elections in 2026 and 2028.

Calls for Accountability

The fallout from the podcast has prompted significant repercussions within the Heritage Foundation. Recently, Chief of Staff Ryan Neuhaus resigned after he encouraged internal critics of the organization to leave. Furthermore, the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) announced its withdrawal from a project intended to combat antisemitism unless Roberts publicly apologizes for his remarks and condemns Carlson.

During an all-staff meeting, Roberts acknowledged mishandling the controversy, stating, “I made a mistake, and I let you down, and I let down this institution.” He also reiterated his intention to remain in his position, despite the turmoil surrounding his leadership.

As the Republican Party grapples with the implications of Fuentes’ influence and the internal dissent at the Heritage Foundation, the future of the organization—once a cornerstone of conservative policymaking—remains uncertain. The current upheaval raises critical questions about the ideological direction of the party and the ability of its leaders to navigate these divisive challenges.
