Democrats Secure Historic Majority in Onondaga County Legislature
On November 7, 2023, the political landscape of Onondaga County shifted dramatically as Democrats captured the majority in the County Legislature for the first time in nearly fifty years. This election marks a significant moment for the region, with Democratic candidates successfully flipping several key seats, leading to a new era of governance.
Democratic Legislator Charles Garland highlighted the importance of this victory, stating, “What happened last night is enormous.” He emphasized the responsibility that comes with their newfound power and the commitment to address the pressing needs of the community. The shift in control signals a response to the evolving priorities of voters, as reflected in the comments from fellow Democratic Legislator Maurice (Mo) Brown. “People want a government that works for them, and they voted for it,” Brown noted.
The outgoing Legislature Chairman Tim Burtis expressed surprise at the election results, admitting that Republicans had anticipated challenges, but did not foresee losing the majority. “We never would have imagined that we would have lost the majority,” Burtis remarked. This unexpected turn of events has prompted a call for collaboration between the parties moving forward.
Democratic Plans for Change
The Democratic majority is poised to tackle long-standing issues within the county, focusing on critical areas such as housing, child care, health care, air quality, and lead exposure. Garland outlined these priorities, stating that a key element of their governance will be an emphasis on transparency and public engagement. “This is going to be a more public, more open government, and I think that’s huge,” he asserted.
Brown echoed these sentiments, reinforcing the commitment to a government that is responsive to its constituents. As the Democrats prepare to take control, Burtis acknowledged the need for Republicans to adapt to the change. “It’ll be a change, and change is hard,” he said. “But I’m sure that we’re going to get there as far as being able to work together for the good of the residents that we represent.”
With their plans in place, the newly elected Democratic legislators aim to restore faith in local governance by prioritizing the needs of the community. The legislative session ahead promises to be a transformative period for Onondaga County as the dynamics shift and new voices take the lead.
