Parents Face Nightmare Diagnosis After Toddler’s Eye Test

When George Gibson, 30, and his wife Laura, 31, took their two-year-old daughter Harper for a routine eye test, they expected to leave with a simple prescription for glasses. Despite repeated consultations with medical professionals over a span of several weeks, including six visits to doctors and the hospital, Harper’s condition continued to deteriorate. Laura described her daughter as “not herself,” noting that Harper lost interest in her favorite activities and frequently woke up at night, crying in pain without the ability to communicate what was wrong.

As concerns grew, doctors reassured the family that Harper’s symptoms were likely benign, leading the Gibsons to believe that a lazy eye was their only concern. “We didn’t think for one second it would be cancer,” Laura stated, reflecting on the couple’s initial hopes for a straightforward resolution.

Emergency Surgery and Diagnosis

Within two days of the eye test, Harper underwent a nine-hour emergency surgery where surgeons successfully removed a tumor from her brain, measuring approximately 1.5 square inches. This surgery was a critical step in addressing her condition, with the medical team managing to extract 99 to 100 percent of the mass, which was subsequently sent for biopsy analysis.

Eight days later, the Gibsons received devastating news: Harper had been diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain cancer that forms in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination and balance. This form of cancer is the most common malignant brain tumor in children, accounting for nearly 20 percent of all pediatric brain tumors in the United States. In the United Kingdom, around 50 children are diagnosed with this disease each year. George reflected on the moment they received the diagnosis, stating, “At that point, your life stops for a moment. We were left speechless. It was caught at the best time we possibly could.”

Facing the Challenges of Treatment

On August 30, 2023, Harper began her first of six planned rounds of chemotherapy. Throughout this challenging time, her parents have admired her remarkable resilience. Laura emphasized that Harper remains “oblivious to the fact that she’s ill,” which has been uplifting for the family. Despite her upbeat demeanor, Harper has faced significant side effects from the treatment, including mouth ulcers and hair loss.

Following the initial round of chemotherapy, she displayed an energetic spirit, bringing joy to those around her. However, the second round proved more difficult, with Harper experiencing reduced appetite and episodes of unconsciousness. George noted the stark contrast in her response, stating, “The aftermath was completely different.”

As the family prepares for the upcoming treatment cycles, George and Laura express confidence in the care provided by the team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. They have found the oncology team to be reassuring, which has alleviated some of the uncertainty surrounding their situation.
