Oak Ridge Boys’ Richard Sterban Reveals Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis

Richard Sterban, a prominent member of the legendary country music group The Oak Ridge Boys, has disclosed that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2023. The announcement came on September 25, marking a significant moment for both Sterban and the fans of the beloved quartet.
In a heartfelt statement, Sterban expressed his gratitude for the support he has received during this challenging time. He stated, “I am under the care of the best cancer doctors in the country and, with the help of the Good Lord above, I believe I will be able to get through this.” He further added, “I want to thank everyone, especially the fans, for your concern, and I would appreciate your continued prayers. Most days I’m feeling very good, and I hope to be back out on the road in several months.”
Sterban’s deep bass vocals have been a defining feature of The Oak Ridge Boys for over five decades. The group is well-known for hits such as “Elvira,” which reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Sterban most recently performed with the band at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May 2023. Since his diagnosis, fellow musicians Aaron McCune and Tim Duncan have stepped in to fill his role during live performances.
Legacy and Career Highlights
Born in New Jersey, Sterban joined The Oak Ridge Boys in 1972, contributing to the group’s rich legacy. Before his time with the band, he sang with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, where he had the unique opportunity to perform and record alongside the iconic Elvis Presley. Sterban also appeared in Presley’s film “Elvis on Tour.”
The Oak Ridge Boys have received numerous accolades throughout their career, including five Grammy Awards, nine GMA Dove Awards, and two American Music Awards. Their induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015 marked a significant milestone in their storied journey. The group has been a cherished member of the Grand Ole Opry since 2011.
Among their impressive catalog, The Oak Ridge Boys boast 17 number-one hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, including classics like “Bobbie Sue,” “American Made,” and “Leaving Louisiana in Broad Daylight.” Sterban’s collaboration with fellow members Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Duane Allen has created the group’s longest-running lineup.
In January 2024, Bonsall announced his retirement and was succeeded by vocalist Ben James. Tragically, Bonsall passed away on July 9, 2024, at the age of 76, marking the end of an era for the group.
As Richard Sterban faces his health challenges, the music community and fans alike continue to rally around him, offering their thoughts and prayers for a swift recovery. With his determination and the support of his loved ones, Sterban remains hopeful for a return to the stage in the near future.
