UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded in Las Vegas on December 19, 2023, when a drunk driver crashed into a homeless encampment, resulting in the death of a 61-year-old man. Elijah Brown, 24, was arrested after allegedly fleeing Dotty’s Casino while intoxicated, with a blood alcohol level of 0.144—almost twice the legal limit of 0.08 in Nevada.

The devastating event occurred at approximately 7:20 PM on Warm Springs Road in southeastern Las Vegas. Eyewitnesses report that Brown lost control of his 2007 Honda Accord, first hitting the center median before veering across several lanes and ultimately crashing into the encampment. Nicholas Sunday, the victim, was pronounced dead at the scene as he became pinned under the vehicle.

Authorities revealed that Brown claimed a possible brake malfunction caused his sudden loss of control. However, police discovered an electronic marijuana device and a pill bottle in his possession, raising concerns about his state at the time of the crash.

Emergency medical services rushed to the scene but were unable to save Sunday, highlighting the tragic consequences of impaired driving. The police have taken Brown’s testimony while he received treatment for minor injuries. Law enforcement is conducting further investigations, including blood tests that require a warrant.

In a swift legal response, Brown appeared in court on December 20, where a judge set his bail at $100,000. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on January 6, 2024, and remains in police custody until then. Notably, Dotty’s Casino has not been held liable for the incident under Nevada law.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the impact such actions can have on vulnerable communities. As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a life cut short in a senseless tragedy.
