Brandi Carlile Delivers Powerful Performances on SNL
Brandi Carlile made a striking return to Saturday Night Live on November 2, 2023, captivating audiences with her performances of “Church & State” and “Human.” Both songs are featured on her recently released solo album, Returning to Myself, which debuted on October 25. This appearance marked Carlile’s fourth time as a musical guest on the iconic show and her second performance this year.
In a solo display of artistry, Carlile opened the evening with “Church & State,” a poignant song addressing themes of a “failing empire” and sociopolitical turmoil. The haunting arrangement was co-written with producer Andrew Watt and her longtime collaborators, Phil and Tim Hanseroth. Following this, she delivered “Human,” a soaring ballad that reflects on vulnerability and resilience, themes that resonate deeply with her fanbase. This song is also the namesake of her upcoming Human Tour, set to commence in February 2026.
Carlile’s new album, Returning to Myself, is her eighth studio release and the first solo project since her critically acclaimed album, In These Silent Days, which was released in 2021. That album achieved significant success, peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and topping both the Rock and Americana/Folk charts. It also garnered multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Americana Album, as well as seven nominations overall.
Beyond her musical contributions, Carlile has become a prominent figure in American roots and rock music. She has curated music festivals such as Girls Just Wanna Weekend and Echoes Through the Canyon, formed the acclaimed country supergroup The Highwomen, and collaborated with music legends like Elton John, Joni Mitchell, and Tanya Tucker.
Her recent SNL appearance was part of a busy October, which included performing at Joni Mitchell‘s Joni Jam at the Hollywood Bowl. During the show, Carlile also announced plans to return to Europe in the fall of 2026, following the North American leg of her tour.
Carlile showcased her charisma in the episode’s promotional segments, humorously commenting on co-star Ashley Padilla‘s new haircut, which led to a playful exchange with host Miles Teller. “The second I saw you, I knew you had that new-haircut glow,” Carlile quipped, prompting Padilla to declare her the new host.
With her powerful performances and engaging presence, Brandi Carlile continues to solidify her status as a leading artist in contemporary music, captivating audiences with her heartfelt lyrics and compelling storytelling.
