Biff Poggi Takes Helm as Michigan Football Faces Uncertainty
The Michigan Wolverines football program is navigating a significant crisis following the firing and arrest of former offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore. Biff Poggi, previously serving as associate head coach, has stepped into the interim coaching role during this turbulent period. According to former Wolverines tight end and current Big Ten Network analyst Jake Butt, Poggi’s leadership is crucial as the team prepares for upcoming challenges, including their matchup against Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, 2023.
Butt shared insights on the “Wolverine Confidential” podcast, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the current situation. “It’s an impossible situation,” Butt stated. “There’s no training for this. There is no precedent for this. The only precedent is to be like a good person yourself. And Michigan is so beyond lucky to have Biff Poggi.” He underscored the importance of strong leadership during chaotic times, noting that Poggi’s experience and values make him an ideal candidate to guide the program.
Poggi’s background includes a successful career as a hedge fund manager before returning to college football. He signed a three-year contract with the University of Michigan in February, which designated him as associate head coach with an annual salary of $45,000. This marks Poggi’s third tenure with the Wolverines, previously contributing to the team’s success during the 2021 and 2022 Big Ten championship seasons. He initially joined the Wolverines as an analyst in 2016 when Butt was a senior.
Butt pointed out that Poggi’s motivations extend beyond financial gain. “The fact that Michigan has Biff Poggi, there’s no one else on the planet that can say what he can say, which is he’s not at Michigan for a paycheck,” he noted. “He’s not there for his ego. He’s not there for personal gain. He doesn’t need any of that. He’s there because he loves the players and believes Michigan to be a special place.”
While Poggi prepares the team for their upcoming bowl game, the university is also conducting a search for Moore’s permanent replacement. Butt mentioned that Poggi has reportedly become the first candidate to officially interview for the full-time head coaching position. “If he wants the job, he has earned the right to pitch himself as the guy to lead this program going forward,” Butt affirmed. “He’s absolutely earned that right.”
In addition to discussing Poggi’s leadership, Butt and MLive’s Ryan Zuke explored other potential candidates for Michigan’s coaching vacancy. They also analyzed the current College Football Playoff field and highlighted frontrunners for the championship.
