Whitehall Voters Approve $30 Million Bond for School Upgrades
In a decisive move, voters in the Whitehall School District have approved a **$30 million** bond proposal aimed at enhancing educational facilities and safety across the district. The proposal was approved during the ballot on **November 4, 2023**, with unofficial results indicating **1,609 votes** in favor (51.10%) and **1,540 votes** against (48.90%), according to the Muskegon County Clerk’s Office.
Key Upgrades and Financial Implications
The bond will finance improvements in three primary areas: upgrading classroom learning environments, enhancing safety measures, and updating building infrastructure. The financial plan includes an estimated **millage rate** that will be levied in **2026**, set at **$1.80** for every **$1,000** of taxable valuation. This rate is designed to return to **5.0 mills**, matching the level last imposed in **2024**. For homeowners, this translates to an annual cost of **$180** for properties with a taxable value of **$100,000**.
Additionally, the anticipated annual millage required to retire the bond debt will be approximately **2.37 mills**, or **$2.37** per **$1,000** of taxable valuation. These figures are based on information provided in the Muskegon County ballot language.
The bond will directly impact four schools within the district: **Whitehall High School**, **Whitehall Middle School**, **Ealy Elementary**, and **Shoreline Elementary**. The district serves around **2,100 students** across its five educational institutions, and the upgrades are expected to create a more conducive learning environment for these students.
Community Support and Future Outlook
The approval of the bond reflects strong community support for educational improvements within the Whitehall School District. Local officials believe that these enhancements are vital for maintaining and increasing the quality of education offered to students.
As the district moves forward with the implementation of these improvements, it aims to foster an environment that not only enhances learning but also prioritizes the safety and well-being of its students. The successful passage of this bond marks a significant step towards achieving these goals, ensuring that the educational facilities are equipped to meet contemporary educational standards and needs.
