New Executive Director Aims to Strengthen Community Ties at East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation
In September 2023, Amy Turner-Thole assumed the role of executive director at the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation, marking a new chapter for the organization. A familiar figure in the community, Turner-Thole brings extensive experience and a personal connection to the district, having parented two graduates of EGRPS (East Grand Rapids Public Schools) and previously serving as a trustee on the Board of Education.
Building Bridges Between Schools and Community
Turner-Thole replaced Amy Stuursma, who left the foundation earlier this year. She expressed a profound commitment to public education, stating, “Public education runs through my family’s blood. I’m the sister, daughter and granddaughter of public school teachers, so I care deeply about public schools.” Her belief is that public schools form the cornerstone of every community, a sentiment she feels is particularly true for East Grand Rapids.
Her background in communications includes time as a television reporter for Fox 17, where she covered various education issues. Additionally, her role as an independent consultant for organizations like First Steps Kent has kept her closely linked to educational initiatives, such as the Ready by Five early childhood millage. Through these experiences, she has witnessed firsthand the positive effects that foundations like hers can have on educational programs, including contributions to STEM, robotics, and the high school renovation project.
“I love that our foundation is really a bridge for parents, community members, alums, and others who support public education,” Turner-Thole remarked. She envisions the foundation as a vital link between the community and the schools, facilitating investments in educational experiences and opportunities that enhance student learning.
Looking Ahead with Gratitude
Although just weeks into her tenure, Turner-Thole expressed her appreciation for the community’s investment in student opportunities. “I’m incredibly grateful to our community for recognizing the importance of investing in opportunities for our students. I appreciate the trust and confidence that they have in the foundation,” she stated. While specific long-term goals are still being formulated, her enthusiasm for her new role is evident.
As the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation continues to foster connections and support for educational initiatives, Turner-Thole’s leadership promises to reinforce the vital relationship between the schools and the community. Her insights and experiences position her well to enhance the foundation’s impact on local education.
