The appearance was part of the show “Shop Cats,” produced by Mad Realities, which features comedian Michelledonna interviewing bodega cats. This visit comes just days before the crucial election on November 4, 2023.

During the episode, Mamdani expressed his fondness for Coca, a calico cat. He remarked, “Coca is cute. Coca wants to play. Coca wants to live in a city she can afford.” His playful comments reflect his lighthearted approach to campaigning, although no specific policies regarding pet-friendly housing were mentioned. The episode also showcased Mamdani attempting a few steps of the Dominican dance, Bachata, and sharing his love for a classic bodega meal: “I also love an egg and cheese on a roll with jalapeños.”

The “Shop Cats” show has gained significant popularity, boasting over 793,400 followers on TikTok and approximately 228,000 followers on Instagram. The episode featuring Mamdani is available on both platforms under the handle @shopcats. Separately, a Cats4Zohran Instagram account has emerged, accumulating about 11,000 followers. Its bio humorously states, “Cats catvassing for Zohran! A livable NYC = safer affordable homes + more treats!” In contrast, a related Dogs4Zohran page has attracted only 708 followers, suggesting a more robust engagement from feline supporters.

As the campaign heats up, Mamdani currently leads in the polls against former New York governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Republican activist Curtis Sliwa. His unique blend of engagement, including appearances on platforms like “Shop Cats,” appears to resonate well with voters looking for a fresh perspective in the mayoral race.

Mad Realities, the production company behind “Shop Cats,” is also known for creating “Hollywood IQ,” a trivia show that tests participants’ knowledge of pop culture.
