Westville Community Unites to Support High School Football Team
In a vibrant display of community spirit, Westville residents are rallying around their high school football team as they prepare for a crucial IHSA quarterfinal match against ALAH this Saturday. Local businesses and students have collaborated to create an eye-catching series of artworks and decorations that adorn storefronts throughout the town, particularly along Illinois 1.
Dee Latoz, co-owner of Latoz Hardware, highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding the team, stating, “Everybody’s all geared up. It’s a big football town.” The store features artwork created by students from the local Art Club, who dedicated four hours on a recent Sunday to hand-paint windows in various businesses. Approximately 20 establishments are participating in this initiative, showcasing the talent and dedication of these young artists.
Art Students Showcase School Spirit
Under the guidance of high school art teacher and club sponsor Mariah Allen, students have not only painted windows but also produced signs and banners to promote school spirit. Allen, a Westville graduate from the Class of 2016, expressed pride in her students’ contributions. “I think it looks incredible. We’re really proud to be part of a community that supports one another,” she said. “It’s special to see so much appreciation and school spirit.” The students are eager to continue volunteering their artistic skills as the playoffs progress.
The Tigers, currently unbeaten, are just two wins away from reaching the state finals. The enthusiasm is palpable, especially after a recent home game that attracted more than 1,600 fans against DuQuoin. Seth Miller, the superintendent of Westville, noted that with ALAH being a closer opponent and the team advancing further into the playoffs, the crowd this weekend could be even larger. “Community support has been very strong,” he added, praising the efforts of a “very energized booster club” that has worked diligently to support the football team and various school programs.
This collaborative effort between students and local businesses not only fosters school spirit but also strengthens community ties in Westville. As the Tigers prepare for their next challenge, the entire town stands united, ready to cheer them on to victory.
