Solano County Supervisors Honor Veterans, Adoption, and Cancer Awareness
UPDATE: The Solano County Board of Supervisors has just issued five urgent proclamations honoring critical issues for November, including Stomach Cancer Awareness Month, Veterans Day, and National Adoption Month. This announcement highlights the pressing need for community support and awareness during this significant month.
Supervisor John Vasquez emotionally declared November as Stomach Cancer Awareness Month, a personal commitment as he battles the disease himself. “I selfishly asked why they wanted to come today, and they said they wanted to support me,” he stated, surrounded by family and fellow supervisors. The American Cancer Society predicts 30,300 new cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed this year, a disease disproportionately affecting minority communities.
November, typically a month filled with family gatherings and food, poses unique challenges for those affected by stomach cancer. “This can be difficult for people living with stomach cancer and especially for those living without a stomach,” the proclamation emphasized.
In another significant recognition, Chair Mitch Mashburn proclaimed November 9-15, 2025, as Law Enforcement Records and Support Personnel Appreciation Week. He praised the essential work of these professionals, stating, “Without these folks, that machine would get clogged.” Their responsibilities include processing vital documents, maintaining criminal records, and ensuring public information is released accurately.
Solano County District Attorney Krishna Abrams echoed Mashburn’s sentiments, emphasizing the crucial role of support personnel in the justice system, calling their work the “backbone of our office.”
Mashburn also highlighted November as National Adoption Month, a cause close to his heart as a former foster parent. “There are 52 children today in the Solano County Foster Care System looking for that forever family,” he revealed. He stressed the importance of a strong support network for children, noting that Child Family Services prioritizes keeping children connected to their kin during adoption processes.
“Most importantly, it continues a sense of belonging for them,” said Margaret Friel, permanency services manager, emphasizing the need for stable, loving homes in the community.
On November 11, the Board will also honor Veterans Day, marking the 107th armistice of World War I. Alfred Sims, Director of Veterans Services, stressed the need for a united front against misinformation regarding veterans’ services, stating, “Our veterans deserve dignity, respect, and the benefits of everyone in our community.” He also addressed recent National Guard deployments impacting public perception.
Vasquez further recognized November 10 as the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, honoring the service and sacrifices of countless Americans throughout history. “Their courage, loyalty, and dedication have inspired generations,” the proclamation stated.
As these proclamations reflect community values and urgent needs, they serve as a call to action for residents of Solano County. The Board encourages everyone to engage, support, and spread awareness during this vital month.
