The most common sleep positions include back sleeping, side sleeping, and stomach sleeping, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. For instance, sleeping on one’s back can help maintain proper spinal alignment, but it may lead to snoring. Conversely, side sleeping is often recommended for pregnant women and those with sleep apnea, as it can reduce pressure on the airways.
According to the Sleep Foundation, side sleeping, particularly on the left side, can enhance circulation and reduce heartburn, making it a preferred choice for many. However, stomach sleeping is typically discouraged, as it can lead to neck and back pain due to improper alignment.
