University of Guam Launches GIS Training Course from Oct. 13-17

The University of Guam (UOG) is set to host a short-term training course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from October 13 to 17, 2023. This five-day program aims to provide professionals and community members with a practical introduction to the essential technology that is increasingly relevant across various sectors.
Participants will engage in a 20-hour course designed to cover the fundamentals of GIS, including spatial data collection, mapping, analysis, and visualization. The course will emphasize hands-on learning, enabling attendees to utilize industry-standard tools and applications. By exploring how GIS can address real-world challenges, participants will gain insights applicable to fields such as environmental management, urban planning, construction, and public services.
Jose Edgardo L. Aban, an assistant professor of geography and the course instructor, highlighted the importance of GIS in today’s data-driven environment. “GIS is an essential tool in today’s data-driven world,” he stated. “Through this course, participants will learn how to turn geographic data into practical insights for real-world planning and problem-solving.”
The training is aimed at equipping individuals with the skills necessary to leverage GIS technology effectively. As urban environments become more complex and the need for informed decision-making increases, understanding GIS can provide a competitive edge in numerous professions.
The University of Guam’s initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of GIS as a vital resource for various industries. By offering this training course, UOG not only fosters professional development but also contributes to the broader community’s understanding of spatial data applications.
Participants interested in enrolling for the course are encouraged to secure their spots as soon as possible, given the limited capacity. This opportunity presents a valuable chance to gain expertise in a field that continues to evolve and expand its influence globally.
