Deadly Car Blast in Delhi Declared Terror Incident by Government
A car explosion in a crowded area of Delhi has been officially classified as a “terror incident” by the Indian government. The blast, which occurred near the historic Red Fort on March 18, 2024, resulted in at least eight fatalities and left approximately 20 individuals injured.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, where officials condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” perpetrated by anti-national forces. The cabinet emphasized the importance of a swift investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.
The resolution stated: “The country has witnessed a heinous terror incident, perpetrated by anti-national forces, through a car explosion. The cabinet directs that the investigation into the incident be pursued with the utmost urgency and professionalism so that the perpetrators, their collaborators, and their sponsors are identified and brought to justice without delay.” In addition, the cabinet reaffirmed India’s “unwavering commitment” to a zero tolerance policy towards terrorism.
The explosion occurred at approximately 18:52 local time (13:52 GMT), when a vehicle stopped at a red light near the metro station close to the Red Fort. According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, the vehicle, identified as a Hyundai i20, was carrying three individuals when it detonated, causing damage to nearby cars and the surrounding area.
Following the incident, Delhi police declared a high alert, with neighboring states such as Uttar Pradesh increasing security measures. This region is notable for its popularity, including major tourist attractions like the Taj Mahal.
Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the media after the explosion, stating, “We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation, taking all possibilities into account. All options will be investigated immediately and we will present the results to the public.”
The blast has evoked strong reactions across the political spectrum. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his sorrow, calling the news “extremely heartbreaking.”
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site constructed in the 17th century, is a significant landmark in Delhi, attracting thousands of visitors daily. Indian prime ministers traditionally deliver their annual Independence Day speeches from this historic location.
