xAI Breaks Ground on Major Memphis Facility to Save 5 Billion Gallons
BREAKING: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has just broken ground on an ambitious $80 million wastewater treatment facility in Memphis, Tennessee. This groundbreaking project aims to conserve an astounding 5 billion gallons of potable water annually, significantly easing the burden on the city’s aquifer.
The facility, which was officially launched on October 10, 2025, is designed to reduce pressure on the Memphis aquifer by 9% and repurpose 20% of wastewater from the nearby Memphis T.E. This facility is set to feature the largest ceramic membrane MBR in the world, utilizing an impressive 13,000 membrane modules that together would cover over 900,000 square feet—an area comparable to 16 football fields. Construction permits for the pump station have been secured, while the main operations permit awaits review from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, keeping the project on track for its ambitious goals.
“This is a big day for Memphis, Tennessee. This initiative not only reduces our need to purchase water from MLGW for our nearby Allen Combined Cycle Plant, but it also eases demand on the region’s potable water system,” stated Don Moul, CEO and President of TVA. “By recycling water for cooling purposes, we’re helping to preserve drinking water for the community and advancing a solution that benefits both the environment and the Greater Memphis area.”
Notably, this facility represents a rare instance of a privately funded water reclamation initiative, with xAI covering all construction costs. The company initially filed plans through its affiliate, CTC Property LLC, in 2024, signaling a robust commitment to sustainable practices in Memphis.
