UPDATE: In a groundbreaking move for Vallejo City Unified School District, three student trustees—Zanyah DeLeon, Beroj Arbab, and Sonia Valdez Jacobo—have officially stepped into their roles, providing a crucial student perspective to district decisions. This unprecedented representation, which began in August 2023, is shaking up the traditional dynamics of school governance.

These passionate students are not just voices; they are advocates for change, aiming to ensure that their peers’ needs are being heard and addressed. Positioned at the decision-making table, they are committed to voicing concerns that could significantly impact their schools and communities.

Zanyah DeLeon, representing John Finney High School, has already made waves by addressing the potential inequities faced by her campus. “I don’t really think that our school has ever really had a voice,” DeLeon stated during a recent town hall meeting. She passionately advocates for improved opportunities, including a focus on Senior Grad Night and essential mental health services, emphasizing, “I just want to make sure that our kids have the same opportunities that other high school kids have.”

In her brief time as a trustee, DeLeon has demonstrated remarkable leadership, raising awareness about the needs of students at her school and passionately questioning the board about critical issues.

Meanwhile, fellow trustee Sonia Valdez Jacobo is taking her role seriously, using her platform to advocate for underrepresented students and those at-risk. Valdez, who previously confronted the VCUSD board regarding school closures while advocating for her brother at Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy, is committed to ensuring that all students, particularly minorities, feel supported. “I know I’m setting an example for not only my younger brother, but also those in my community,” she shared. Valdez is actively working with the SER Latino Program to implement protective measures for undocumented students, showcasing her dedication to fostering a more inclusive environment.

On the other hand, Beroj Arbab, representing Jesse Bethel High School, is focused on elevating school pride and academic performance. With initiatives aimed at improving SAT and AP exam scores, Arbab believes that fostering a sense of belonging is key. He stated, “If you want them to have pride, you need to give them something to be proud of,” highlighting the need for improvements in school facilities. His efforts to address restroom conditions have already led to positive changes at the district level.

These student trustees are not only reshaping the landscape of Vallejo schools; they are inspiring their peers and setting a new standard for student engagement in local governance. The trio encourages fellow students to get involved, with Valdez urging, “Go for it,” as they strive to create a supportive environment for all students.

As the Vallejo City Unified School District continues to evolve, the community is encouraged to witness the dynamic contributions of these young leaders firsthand. Board meetings are held on the first and second Wednesdays of each month, where the community can observe how these student trustees bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the table.

The impact of these students’ involvement is palpable, as they work tirelessly to ensure their voices and the voices of their peers resonate throughout the district. With their dedication and passion, they are paving the way for a brighter future for Vallejo’s youth.
