URGENT UPDATE: A confirmed case of measles in a school-aged child from Montezuma County, Colorado, has led health officials to warn residents of potential exposure in the towns of Cortez and Mancos. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced this alarming news late Wednesday night, urging those who may have been in these areas between November 5 and today to monitor for symptoms and avoid public gatherings through December 4.

The child, who was not vaccinated against measles, developed symptoms after traveling to a region of Colorado currently experiencing an ongoing measles outbreak. Public health officials have indicated that the risk of exposure is significant, although specific locations of exposure have not yet been disclosed.

Measles is an extremely contagious disease, and symptoms typically manifest between 7 to 21 days after exposure. Initial symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that usually begins on the face before spreading. Health officials stress the importance of contacting a healthcare provider if symptoms develop, to minimize further exposure and address health concerns promptly.

The urgency of this alert cannot be overstated. Colorado has seen a troubling trend in measles cases, with a total of 31 confirmed cases reported this year alone, according to the state’s health dashboard updated in October. The current outbreak highlights the critical need for vaccination, as measles can largely be prevented with two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Residents are advised to stay informed and vigilant. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available. As of now, community members in Cortez and Mancos should take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families during this developing situation.

Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent health alert. Share this information widely to help raise awareness and ensure community safety.
