UPDATE: The Swedish National Contact Point (NCP) has just released a critical report addressing serious worker rights complaints against the gaming giant Evolution AB, based in Tbilisi, Georgia. This urgent statement comes after the Social Justice Center filed a formal complaint on behalf of the Evo-Union trade union, highlighting troubling issues related to working conditions, pay, and union rights at Evolution’s Georgian branch.

The dispute began in July 2024, when employees at Evolution’s Tbilisi studio initiated a strike, citing inadequate wages, hazardous work environments, and poor treatment from management. The conflict escalated, leading to international scrutiny over labor rights, as workers alleged that Evolution failed to adhere to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, which mandate fair wages, safe workplaces, and the right to unionize.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Evolution AB has been accused of hindering resolution efforts by refusing to engage in discussions with the NCP, claiming that such talks would be unproductive. The NCP, undeterred, proceeded with its review, gathering testimonies from both workers and Georgian officials that painted a starkly different picture of workplace conditions.

In its findings, the NCP noted reports of confrontations between striking workers and hired security, condemning any acts of violence from either side. While Evolution AB maintains that it offers competitive pay and modern facilities, with over 22,000 staff globally, workers have voiced significant concerns about their safety and rights.

The NCP’s report, which does not render legal judgments but emphasizes the need for constructive dialogue, urges Evolution AB to recommit to global labor standards and facilitate union organization among its workers. The NCP will follow up on this case in a year to assess progress and reiterated its willingness to assist both parties in fostering a meaningful discussion.

As labor rights issues continue to emerge globally, this developing situation at Evolution AB serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by workers in the gaming industry. The immediate impact of this report highlights the importance of accountability and the need for companies to prioritize the rights and safety of their employees.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation evolves, and join the conversation on social media to share your thoughts on worker rights and corporate responsibility.
