Ohio State Dominates Illinois 13-0 as Buckeyes Extend Lead
UPDATE: No. 1 Ohio State leads No. 17 Illinois 13-0 with 6:43 left in the second quarter during a critical Big Ten showdown at Gies Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes are showcasing their dominance early, capitalizing on key defensive stops and offensive efficiency.
The Buckeyes just settled for another field goal, extending their lead after a drive that saw them cover 25 yards in 6 plays over 2:39. Quarterback Julian Sayin struggled to convert a crucial third down, but kicker Jayden Fielding delivered with a 31-yard field goal, marking his second of the game.
Illinois’ offense has faltered, unable to match the pace of Ohio State’s high-powered attack. The Illini’s latest attempt to mount a comeback was derailed by a bad snap during a punt, resulting in a turnover on downs and giving Ohio State favorable field position.
At 9:22 Q2, Illinois was forced to bring on punter Keelan Crimmins after a contentious play where a third-down reception was overturned. The Illini’s drive stalled at the Ohio State 48-yard line, leaving them with just 22 yards gained over 10 plays in that series.
Ohio State’s defense is suffocating, holding Illinois to just 34 total yards compared to their own 125 yards. Earlier in the quarter, the Buckeyes had their first punt of the game after a crucial review overturned what would have been a big gain.
As the teams entered the second quarter, Ohio State had already established control with a 10-0 lead thanks to a touchdown run by C.J. Donaldson Jr. and a field goal from Fielding. Donaldson’s 1-yard scoring run capped a quick drive fueled by an interception of Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer, who has struggled to find his rhythm.
With Illinois now 5-1 this season, fans are eager to see if the Illini can rally against the undefeated Buckeyes. The energy in the stadium is palpable, with tailgating festivities leading up to this crucial matchup.
The game is being broadcast live, with updates provided by The News-Gazette’s multimedia team. Fans can listen to the radio call for free at WDWS.com and WHMS.com.
