UPDATE: Niina Petrokina has taken a commanding lead in her quest to defend her European figure skating title, scoring 70.61 points in the short program on Wednesday in Sheffield, England. This impressive performance comes just months after recovering from Achilles tendon surgery in October, showcasing her remarkable comeback as she eyes the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

Petrokina’s flawless routine included a stunning triple lutz-triple toeloop combination, marking a personal best and surpassing her score from the previous year’s championship. She is now well-positioned to reclaim her title, having shocked the figure skating world with her victory last year on home ice.

As the competition heats up, Nina Pinzarrone of Belgium currently occupies second place with 64.97 points, while Italy’s Anna Pezzetta follows closely in third with 64.85 points. Defending champion Loena Hendrickx, despite struggling through an injury-plagued season, managed to secure fifth place but fell during her performance. Meanwhile, Anastasiia Gubanova, the 2023 champion, faced similar challenges and is currently in 11th place after a fall.

In pairs, Georgia’s Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava are leading the charge for a first European title, achieving a score of 75.96 points, edging out the defending champions Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany, who scored 74.81 points. Hungary’s Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko sit in third with 73.32 points. Notably, all of the top three pairs skaters, except for Hase, were born in Russia and now represent other countries, reflecting the ongoing absence of Russian competitors at these championships.

The stakes are high as the pairs free skate is scheduled for Thursday, followed by the women’s free skate on Friday. With the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics looming, every score counts, and Petrokina’s performance could be a decisive factor in her journey towards Olympic glory.

Stay tuned for updates as the European Figure Skating Championships unfold, revealing who will rise to the challenge in this high-stakes competition.
