UPDATE: The Marshall Mavericks have launched their 2025 tennis season with an intense schedule, battling through three matches in just four days. Despite facing formidable opponents, the young team is showing resilience and potential, standing at 0–3 after a challenging start.
In their season opener on October 14, the Mavericks fell to Henderson with a score of 8–5. However, standout performances from players like Jace Johnson provided glimpses of their growing strength. Johnson triumphed in both Boys 1 Singles (8–5) and Mixed Doubles alongside Maggie Hammett, who also notched an impressive win in Girls Singles.
The Mavericks faced the Pine Tree Pirates on October 16, suffering an 11–4 defeat that belied the closeness of the match. Johnson continued his winning streak in Boys 1 Singles, and his victory in Boys 2 Doubles with teammate Jagger Abernathy concluded with a thrilling 9–8 tiebreaker. The dynamic duo of Audry Ellis and Hammett dominated in Girls Doubles, claiming an 8–3 victory.
On October 17, the Mavericks took on the Athens Hornets at Tyler Junior College, where they fought valiantly but lost 10–3. Johnson remained undefeated in singles, overcoming his opponent Husband with a close 9–7 match. Hammett delivered her best performance so far, securing an 8–5 win.
