Elyria Surges Past Avon 78-64, Ends Eagles’ 7-Game Streak
URGENT UPDATE: Elyria’s boys basketball team decisively defeated Avon 78-64 on January 16, 2023, ending the Eagles’ impressive seven-game winning streak. The Pioneers bounced back from a recent loss, demonstrating a commanding performance that has significant implications for the Southwestern Conference (SWC) title race.
The Pioneers stormed out to a quick start, leading 19-4 early in the first quarter, setting the tone for the game. Elyria guard Tink Shelton emphasized the team’s motivation, stating, “We still had a nasty taste in our mouth from the last loss, and we felt like that was not us. We wanted to come out and show them that we are still No. 1 in this conference.”
Elyria’s defense was relentless, holding Avon scoreless for the first four minutes. Coach Brett Larrick noted, “That first half might have been the most focused and locked in as we were in all areas.” Shelton, who stands at just 5-foot-5, was tasked with guarding Avon’s All-Ohioan player Joey Ziegler, who managed to score 14 points but struggled throughout the game.
By halftime, Elyria had built an impressive lead of 44-21, showcasing their physicality and intensity. Avon coach Mike Fitch admitted, “Elyria brought intention and physicality, and we backed down.”
Elyria’s momentum continued despite an injury to key player Jermiah Daniels in the second quarter. Shelton reported that Daniels encouraged the team to maintain their focus despite his absence. As Elyria led 33-10 in the second quarter, Avon began to show signs of life but could not close the gap until the final quarter.
Multiple Pioneers stepped up, with Rondel Grimmett scoring 15 points, Cam Bell adding 13 points, Seth Wilkerson contributing 12 points, and Kendyll Compton finishing with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Larrick praised his team’s depth, stating, “When you get those numbers, that is a lot of contributions.”
As of this win, Elyria improved their record to 10-3 (5-2 SWC), while Avon’s record fell to 9-2 (4-3 SWC), marking a significant shift in the SWC standings. The Pioneers are now in a strong position as they prepare for their next matchup against Olmsted Falls on December 20, after previously losing to them 76-63.
Despite the setback, Fitch remained optimistic, stating, “It is one loss. It is basketball. You lose games. We are still 9-2, and we still have a game Tuesday.” Avon will face North Ridgeville on January 20, looking to bounce back.
The stunning defeat of Avon not only alters the current standings but also highlights the fierce competition within the SWC, making future games crucial for all teams involved. As the second cycle of the SWC schedule begins, all eyes will be on Elyria and Avon as they strive for redemption and supremacy in the league.
