Users seeking improved document editing capabilities on their self-hosted Nextcloud platforms are turning to the integration of OnlyOffice. This shift comes after many individuals, including a user who recently upgraded their NAS (Network Attached Storage) system, reported performance issues with the previous Collabora Office setup.

The transition to OnlyOffice offers a smoother experience for document management. Initially, the user had set up Nextcloud with Collabora Office via a built-in CODE (Collabora Online Development Edition) server. Despite having basic functionality, the performance was often sluggish, particularly when editing spreadsheets. The user noted that resizing columns felt delayed and frustrating.

Recognizing the need for improvement, the user explored the Nextcloud apps and discovered the OnlyOffice app. After consulting the official documentation, they found the installation process straightforward and efficient. This new setup eliminates some of the complications associated with the previous configuration, which had been running within a virtual machine on TrueNAS and Proxmox.

Streamlined Setup and Configuration

The initial setup of OnlyOffice was simplified by its availability on TrueNAS Scale’s Discover app store. The user created a dedicated OnlyOffice Document Server with essential settings, including a secure connection through HTTPS to ensure compatibility with their Nextcloud instance.

With the server configured, they directed Nextcloud to the OnlyOffice URL, completing the integration with minimal hassle. The ability to specify which file types OnlyOffice would handle further streamlined the process, allowing the user to open documents directly from Nextcloud.

A Superior Editing Experience

Once OnlyOffice was operational, the user quickly noted significant improvements in their editing experience. Document loading was faster, and the interface felt more responsive than that of Collabora Office. While there were still minor delays, particularly when opening documents for the first time, the overall performance was satisfactory for cloud-based editing.

OnlyOffice also supports real-time co-editing, enabling multiple users on the same Nextcloud instance to collaborate effectively. The user appreciated the interface, which closely resembles that of Microsoft Office, making it easier for those familiar with that environment to navigate.

While the user maintains a preference for desktop editing applications, they found that OnlyOffice met their needs when accessing documents on various devices. This flexibility has made the transition well worth the effort, enhancing their overall experience with Nextcloud as a cloud storage solution.

As the user continues to refine their NAS setup, they have expressed satisfaction with the enhancements brought by integrating OnlyOffice. The process of optimizing their home lab has become an enjoyable venture, inspiring further exploration and learning in the realm of self-hosted applications.
