Democrats Push for Impeachment of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem

Following a shooting incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, a group of Democratic lawmakers has initiated a push to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. Representatives Doris Matsui and Mike Thompson are among the prominent figures supporting this effort, which includes backing an impeachment resolution led by Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois.

The call for impeachment was sparked by the death of Renee Nicole Gold, who was shot during an anti-ICE protest in Minneapolis on January 7, 2023. Democrats have expressed outrage over what they describe as excessive force used by immigration enforcement agents, particularly in light of Gold’s tragic death. Matsui characterized Noem’s leadership as “lawless and incompetent,” claiming she has violated her constitutional oath and allowed for the “senseless killing” of civilians.

During a news conference, Kelly stated, “Secretary Noem, you have violated your oath of office and there will be consequences.” This sentiment echoes the frustration of nearly 70 other House members who share the desire to hold Noem accountable.

Republicans have largely defended the actions of ICE personnel, asserting that they acted in self-defense during the incident. Representative Tom McClintock, who chairs the House immigration subcommittee, argued that ICE officers were fulfilling their duties under federal law. He stated, “The Democrats here don’t like that law, they object to its enforcement, and they are actively encouraging citizens to obstruct its enforcement.”

Despite the fervor among some Democrats, the impeachment effort faces significant challenges. With the House currently under a Republican majority of 218 to 213, and a Senate that is also predominantly Republican with only 53 Democratic senators, the prospect of successful impeachment appears slim.

The Department of Homeland Security responded to the impeachment calls, criticizing the initiative as “silly.” A department spokesperson highlighted the increased dangers ICE officers face, citing a reported 1,300% rise in assaults against them. This response underscores the ongoing tensions between the two parties regarding immigration enforcement and public safety.

In addition to the shooting incident, Kelly has outlined three articles of impeachment against Noem. These include charges of obstruction of Congress, violation of public trust, and self-dealing. According to Kelly, Noem has “willfully obstructed Congressional oversight” and compromised public safety through her actions.

As the debate continues, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed a desire to maintain focus on broader issues such as affordability, indicating that the Democratic caucus has not yet engaged in a comprehensive discussion about Noem’s actions. He noted the need to explore accountability measures related to what he described as an “out-of-control administration” that undermines democratic norms.

The situation highlights a growing divide between the two parties on matters of immigration policy and enforcement. With the potential for impeachment looming, the coming weeks will likely determine the extent to which these issues will dominate the political landscape. The developments surrounding Noem’s leadership at the Department of Homeland Security could have far-reaching implications, not only for her future but also for the broader conversation on immigration reform in the United States.
