Peacock to Debut Reboot of Tom Hanks’ Classic Comedy The ‘Burbs
A reboot of the iconic 1989 film, The ‘Burbs, starring Tom Hanks, is set to premiere on Peacock on February 8, 2026. The original movie, directed by Joe Dante, has garnered a cult following over the decades, thanks to its unique blend of comedy and suspense. The reboot aims to capture that same charm while introducing a contemporary storyline.
The series will explore themes relevant to modern suburban life. According to a report by Deadline, the narrative centers on a young couple whose peaceful existence is disrupted by the arrival of new neighbors. These newcomers bring with them “old secrets and new deadly threats,” challenging the couple’s perception of their seemingly tranquil neighborhood.
Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
The reboot features Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall in leading roles, though their characters will differ from those of Hanks and Carrie Fisher in the original film. The supporting cast includes notable talents such as Paula Pell, Kapil Talwalkar, and Julia Duffy. The series is created by Celeste Hughey, with executive producers including Brian Grazer, Seth MacFarlane, and Dana Olsen, the latter also being the writer of the original film.
Peacock greenlit the series in September 2024 and recently released its trailer, generating buzz among fans of the original movie and new audiences alike. The anticipation surrounding the show reflects the ongoing trend of reviving beloved classics for modern viewers.
Box Office Success of the Original Film
The original The ‘Burbs was produced on a budget of approximately $18 million and achieved substantial financial success. According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed around $36.6 million domestically and an additional $12.5 million internationally, bringing its total lifetime earnings to nearly $49.1 million.
This legacy sets a high bar for the reboot, as audiences hope the new adaptation will honor the spirit of its predecessor while offering fresh perspectives. With the release date approaching, fans eagerly await the chance to see how this beloved story is reimagined for today’s audiences.
