The Grafton-Midview Public Library, located at 983 Main St., held a nostalgic Cookie Exchange on December 18, 2023, as part of its Charlie Cart program. The event invited community members to bring cookies and their cherished recipes, fostering a spirit of sharing and celebration during the holiday season.

Valerie Conrad, the coordinator of the Charlie Cart program at the library, expressed her enthusiasm for the event. “It’s just something I remember doing,” she said, reflecting on the tradition of cookie exchanges. “I thought it would be wonderful to have people come and exchange recipes.” This year marked the inaugural Cookie Exchange, and participants engaged in socializing and sampling a delightful variety of cookies, including pizzelles and peppermint blossoms.

In addition to the cookie exchange, Conrad organized a White Elephant-style gift exchange to enhance the festive atmosphere. “They’re (the cookies) wonderful; they’re recipes that speak for themselves,” she remarked. “They have so much flavor and history to them.” The event not only allowed guests to share their culinary creations but also to connect through personal stories linked to their recipes.

The Cookie Exchange resonated with the community’s fondness for traditional holiday practices. Conrad noted, “This town and Main Street love old-fashioned Christmas.” She aimed to create an inclusive event that showcased a range of cookies while encouraging the sharing of personal narratives behind the recipes.

Engaging Children Through the Charlie Cart

The Charlie Cart program, which Conrad oversees, is designed to provide hands-on food education, particularly for children. The mobile kitchen is equipped with various utensils and equipment, allowing children to learn about food safety and preparation techniques. “The mission statement is to make hands-on food education accessible everywhere children gather to learn,” she explained. This initiative empowers children to make informed and healthy food choices.

Conrad emphasized the importance of integrating literacy with culinary skills, creating a comprehensive learning experience. “I brainstorm different programs to tie in with literacy,” she said, highlighting the dual focus of the Charlie Cart initiative.

Expressing gratitude for the community’s support, Conrad stated, “I’m really thankful for the library and the Charlie Cart, and how the community is so strong in collaborating with the library.” She looks forward to hosting the Cookie Exchange again next year, reinforcing the event’s potential to become a cherished holiday tradition.
