Buffalo Bills running back James Cook did not participate in training camp practice for a second consecutive day on Monday, as he seeks a contract extension before the end of his rookie deal. At 25 years old, Cook briefly appeared on the field, dressed in workout gear and a beanie, but he did not engage in practice. Instead, he walked along the periphery of the field, entered a portable toilet, and subsequently left for the team locker room. This follows a similar absence on Sunday, where he was present but did not take part in any drills.

Cook explained his decision to reporters, stating he was absent due to “business.” Prior to this, he participated in all eight training camp practices and three days of mandatory minicamp but opted out of the team’s voluntary offseason activities.

Brandon Beane, the Bills’ general manager, addressed the situation during an appearance on local radio station WGR550. He indicated that the team was unaware of Cook’s decision to sit out Sunday’s practice until shortly before it began. Beane expressed disappointment over the situation, noting, “This is my ninth season here. We’ve never had a player miss due to a contract or anything like that, so that’s disappointing for me.”

Despite ongoing discussions over a contract extension, the two parties have yet to reach an agreement. Beane confirmed that there has been “constant communication” with Cook and his team, but no deal has materialized. “We tried to get something done with [Cook], and unfortunately, it takes two, and both sides have to agree on what that number is,” Beane said.

The Bills recently extended contracts for three other members of the 2022 draft class: Christian Benford, Terrel Bernard, and Khalil Shakir. Beane emphasized that while he supports compensating running backs, finding the “sweet spot” for contract negotiations is essential.

Cook’s teammates, including running backs Ty Johnson and Ray Davis, expressed their understanding of Cook’s position. Johnson stated, “I respect what he’s doing and everything. He’s trying to do what’s best for him.”

The Bills’ training camp will break on Tuesday, with practice resuming at St. John Fisher University on Wednesday. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the situation surrounding Cook’s contract remains a significant talking point.
