Tributes Flow for Richard Waller, Beloved Father and Engineer
Richard “Dick” David Waller, a cherished father, grandfather, and accomplished engineer, passed away recently at the age of 88. His death comes just five months after the loss of his beloved wife, Marilyn Waller. The family is mourning the loss of a man who made a significant impact on their lives and the lives of many others.
Born on March 28, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Richard and his younger brother, Ronnie, faced hardship early in life after their mother, Mildred, passed away when Richard was only four years old. Raised by their grandparents, the boys attended St. John Kanty Catholic grade school and later Pulaski High School. Richard developed a passion for mathematics and music, which laid the foundation for a successful career in electrical engineering and jazz music.
Richard financed his education by performing in jazz nightclubs, ultimately graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University in 1958. Following his studies, he served in the Wisconsin Air National Guard and began a career at Hughes Aircraft Corporation in the Radar Division, relocating to sunny Los Angeles, California, in 1959. His work on defense projects contributed to significant advancements in technology, marking him as a pioneer in the field.
In 1960, Richard met Marilyn Herrmann, who was living in the same apartment complex while attending airline school. They married in 1961 and soon bought their first home in Westchester. Their passion for travel took them across Europe, South America, and Asia, enriching their lives with diverse experiences.
The couple welcomed their first child, Susan, in 1966, followed by their son, Steven, in 1971. The family settled in Rancho Palos Verdes in 1969 and continued to explore the world together, cherishing trips to visit relatives and enjoy outdoor activities like skiing and vacations in Hawaii.
Richard’s love for music never waned. Throughout his life, he played in various big band jazz and Latin bands in the South Bay area, showcasing his talents on the alto and tenor saxophone, clarinet, and flute. He often performed at venues such as Alpine Village and enjoyed golfing with friends.
Richard is predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, and his brother, Ronald Waller. He leaves behind his daughter, Susan (Mike) Poland; son, Steven Waller; grandchildren Shaun, Matthew, and Sara Poland, and Stephanie and Sophia Waller; and great-grandchild Celeste Poland. He is also survived by cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on January 21, 2026, from 16:00 to 20:00 at the Villleta Suite of Green Hills Mortuary. A funeral mass is scheduled for January 22, 2026, at 11:00 at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes, followed by a reception in Barrett Hall. Richard will be laid to rest at Green Hills Cemetery.
The family encourages all who knew Richard to celebrate his life and contributions, keeping his memory alive through the stories, music, and love he shared with everyone around him.
