Urgent Call for Volunteers: Join Shoal Creek Park’s Privet Pull

UPDATE: Volunteers are urgently needed this Saturday, February 28, at Shoal Creek Park in Montevallo, Alabama, for a critical event aimed at removing invasive Chinese privet that threatens the park’s native ecosystem. The Shoal Creek Park Foundation is hosting the first-ever “Privet Pull” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park, located at 2781 Highway 119.

Community members are called to action as this invasive plant species has spread rapidly, crowding out native flora essential for local wildlife. Introduced in the 19th century as a hedge, Chinese privet has since escaped cultivation, becoming a significant ecological threat. It competes aggressively with native species, offers little nutritional value to birds and insects, and its berries are toxic to mammals.

This hands-on event will empower volunteers to cut, snip, and pull privet plants, helping restore balance to the park’s ecosystem. Organizers emphasize that even a few hours of work can make a profound difference: “We need a lot of people to come out and make quick work of this damaging plant. A few hours of time will help improve Shoal Creek Park for everyone—humans, plants, and animals alike,” they stated.

Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy boots and bring gloves, along with any personal weeding tools they prefer. The Shoal Creek Park Foundation will provide additional tools and water, and lunch will be served afterward. Support for this initiative comes from Jefferson County Greenways, the Magic City Toolbank, the Alabama Audubon Society, and Rural Bridge Community Works of Shelby County.

Shoal Creek Park, a treasured natural area willed to the city by local native Betty Lawler, has become a vital recreational destination since the Shoal Creek Park Foundation was established in 2017. The foundation has focused on improving trails, accessibility, and community engagement, making this event a cornerstone of their ongoing efforts to protect and enhance the park.

This is a pivotal moment for the community and the environment. Every volunteer’s effort counts towards preserving the unique biodiversity of Shoal Creek Park. Don’t miss this chance to be part of something impactful—join the “Privet Pull” this Saturday and help safeguard the park’s future!

Stay tuned for additional updates as the event date approaches.
