Legal Issues in College Basketball
In a separate legal development, federal prosecutors have charged 26 individuals, including former college basketball players, for their alleged involvement in a scheme to fix games. This indictment, filed in Philadelphia, accuses the defendants of attempting to manipulate outcomes in NCAA and Chinese Basketball Association games.
Among those charged, 15 played for Division 1 NCAA schools as recently as the 2024-25 season. The charges include wire fraud, bribery, and conspiracy, with authorities stating that players were lured with bribe payments ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 per game. This crackdown follows NCAA investigations that resulted in lifetime bans for at least ten players.
