Roberta Flack Biopic and Documentary Projects Announced

Two film projects celebrating the life and legacy of singer-songwriter Roberta Flack are officially underway, spearheaded by Robin Roberts of Good Morning America. According to Deadline, Roberts’ production company, Rock’n Robin Productions, has secured Flack’s life rights and is developing both a scripted biopic and a documentary.

Flack, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 88, had been diagnosed with ALS in 2022. Known for her iconic hits, including “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” Flack won consecutive Grammy Awards for Record of the Year in 1973 and 1974. Her music not only dominated the charts but also played a significant role in shaping the R&B genre, particularly the quiet storm sub-genre, alongside her frequent collaborator Donny Hathaway.

Beyond her musical achievements, Flack was deeply engaged in social and political movements during the post-Civil Rights era. She developed friendships with prominent activists such as Angela Davis and Rev. Jesse Jackson, using her platform to advocate for change.
