Deerfield-Windsor Sophomores Dominate GIAA Region 3 Championships
UPDATE: A thrilling display of talent unfolded this morning at the GIAA Region 3 Championships held at Albany State West, as two sophomores from Deerfield-Windsor delivered an unforgettable performance. Whatley Fountain and Sophie Logan not only secured individual titles but propelled their teams to sweeping victories, solidifying their status as rising stars in cross country.
In the boys’ race, Fountain showcased his elite skills, finishing in an impressive 15 minutes, 39 seconds, just shy of his own school record. The sophomore took charge from the outset, leaving competitors in his wake. Fountain expressed his satisfaction post-race, stating, “It feels awesome. It wasn’t quite the fastest time, but I’ll take it.” His victory marks a significant step in what promises to be a remarkable athletic career.
The Deerfield boys dominated overall, scoring just 19 points to outpace second-place Brookwood with 35 points, and Tiftarea at 80 points. Senior Jack Moore achieved a personal-best time of 16:48.88, contributing to the team’s commanding performance.
Meanwhile, Logan’s race was a test of determination and strategy. She battled neck-and-neck with Terrell Academy’s Anna Kate Miller for the majority of the race before pulling ahead to finish in 21 minutes, 26.90 seconds. Miller followed closely behind in 21 minutes, 54.10 seconds. Logan’s triumph not only earned her an individual title but also guided the Lady Knights to victory, scoring 30 points overall.
Additional top finishes for the Lady Knights included Susan Scott (5th), Sydney Daniel (7th), Alli Roland (8th), and Reagan Church (9th), further emphasizing the team’s strength. Terrell Academy finished second, bolstered by Miller and Sarah Freeman in 11th place, while Brookwood took third.
Today’s remarkable performances not only highlight the individual prowess of Fountain and Logan but also signal a bright future for Deerfield-Windsor’s cross country program. As both teams gear up for the GIAA State Championships in just two weeks, anticipation builds for what could be another historic run.
