UPDATE: The Las Vegas Aces have clinched their third WNBA championship in just four seasons, defeating the Phoenix Mercury 97-86 in a decisive Game 4 on July 15, 2023. A’ja Wilson delivered an electrifying performance with 31 points and 9 rebounds, solidifying her status as Finals MVP.

In a thrilling showdown in Phoenix, Wilson spearheaded the Aces’ offensive onslaught, consistently finding ways to score against multiple defenders. Her efforts were bolstered by teammates Chelsea Gray, Jewell Loyd, and Dana Evans, who collectively transformed the game in the second quarter with a flurry of three-pointers.

The Aces dominated the series, finishing off a four-game sweep of the Mercury, averaging over 90 points per game. Coach Becky Hammon praised her team, declaring, “These guys are elite.”

The Aces’ championship victory was punctuated by a festive postgame atmosphere, with Wilson donning oversized ski goggles and shaking a pink tambourine, symbolizing the joy of their achievement. “I’m just so grateful to be with this bunch — and that’s not the alcohol talking,” she said, radiating excitement.

Despite struggling with her shooting, finishing 7 of 21 from the field, Wilson was instrumental at the free-throw line, sinking 17 of 19 attempts. Gray added 18 points, including critical three-pointers in the fourth quarter that quelled a late Mercury rally.

The Aces maintained control throughout the game, leading 76-62 entering the fourth quarter. The Mercury made a brief surge, cutting the lead to 76-70 with just under eight minutes remaining, but the Aces quickly regained their footing.

Kahleah Copper led the Mercury with 30 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Aces’ relentless offense. Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts faced a tough night, receiving two quick technical fouls and being ejected in the third quarter. The Mercury struggled with injuries, missing key players like Satou Sabally, who suffered a concussion in Game 3, and Alyssa Thomas, who was limited due to a shoulder injury sustained during the game.

The Aces’ victory marks another historic moment, as they have now secured three championships in four years, reaffirming their dominance in the league. The Mercury, who had made an impressive playoff run, fell short in their quest for a fourth title, having last won in 2014.

As the Aces celebrate their victory and look ahead, fans can expect this powerhouse team to continue their winning ways in the upcoming seasons. The championship trophy was presented to them by WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who faced a mixed reception from the crowd.

For basketball enthusiasts and fans alike, this championship win by the Aces serves as a testament to their skill, teamwork, and resilience, setting the stage for an exciting future in women’s basketball.
