The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, urging the conflicting parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and seek a compromise. This appeal comes as the violence in the country escalates, marking another year fraught with turmoil, displacements, and attacks on peacekeeping forces.

Urgent Need for a Cessation of Hostilities

During a recent address to the UN Security Council, Guterres acknowledged a peace initiative presented by Sudan’s Transitional Prime Minister but emphasized that only a halt to hostilities and an inclusive political dialogue could prevent the nation from spiraling further into chaos. He reaffirmed the commitment of the UN’s Personal Envoy for Sudan to facilitate discussions between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The call for diplomacy is particularly pressing given the recent security setbacks. Earlier in October 2023, a drone strike on a UN logistic base in Kadugli, located in South Kordofan, resulted in the deaths of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and left several others injured. This incident forced the evacuation of a long-established UN facility in the region.

Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

Humanitarian conditions in Sudan have sharply deteriorated, with recent briefings to the UN Security Council identifying Kordofan as a new epicenter of violence. Reports indicate that drone strikes have targeted civilians, including children, and have struck hospitals and schools. The fighting between the SAF and RSF has intensified across both Darfur and Kordofan, contributing to mass displacements and obstructing aid delivery.

Since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023, driven by a power struggle between military leaders, Sudan has descended into one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. Human rights organizations have reported indiscriminate attacks on civilians, widespread destruction of health facilities, and significant displacements from refugee camps such as Zamzam in North Darfur, raising alarms about potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.

International pressure for an immediate ceasefire has intensified. In recent months, UN officials, along with foreign ministers from countries such as Germany, Jordan, and the United Kingdom, have issued urgent calls for a cessation of hostilities, warning that atrocities, famine, and a climate of impunity are pushing Sudan toward a catastrophic situation.

The ongoing violence has not only exacerbated the humanitarian crisis but also complicated efforts for a peaceful resolution. As the situation unfolds, the international community continues to monitor the developments in Sudan, stressing the importance of a unified approach to restore peace and security.
