Train Collision in Spain Claims 39 Lives, Injures Over 120
A tragic train collision in Spain on January 19, 2026, has resulted in at least 39 fatalities and over 122 injuries. The crash occurred near Adamuz at approximately 19:45 local time, involving a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid and another train arriving from Madrid to Huelva.
According to the Spanish rail operator Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF), the rear of the train carrying 289 passengers derailed and subsequently collided with the incoming train. The impact was catastrophic, primarily affecting the lead carriages of the second train, which was transporting 200 passengers. Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente stated that the front of the second train bore the brunt of the collision.
The violent impact caused several carriages to descend down a 4-meter slope, complicating rescue operations. Recovery teams discovered some victims’ bodies hundreds of meters away from the crash site, underscoring the severity of the disaster.
As emergency services worked tirelessly overnight, 122 individuals were reported injured, with 48 still hospitalized. Among these, 12 remained in the intensive care unit, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by medical personnel in the aftermath of the collision.
A survivor, a young woman named Ana, shared her harrowing experience. “Everything went dark,” she recalled. “The train tipped to one side, then everything went dark, and all I heard were screams.” Ana was traveling back to Madrid with her sister, who was rescued by firefighters while Ana was helped out by other passengers.
This incident marks the highest death toll from a train accident in Spain since a 2013 derailment in Santiago de Compostela, which resulted in 80 deaths. In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of national mourning to honor the victims and their families.
In a statement shared via social media, Puente expressed his gratitude for the rescue teams’ efforts under challenging conditions and extended condolences to those affected. He confirmed that the current death toll is “not final,” indicating the potential for further discoveries as investigations continue.
Significantly, reports indicate that ADIF had received warnings regarding “severe wear and tear” on the high-speed rail tracks as early as 2025. The implications of this warning may play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation into the causes of the collision.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event, the focus now shifts to recovery efforts and thorough investigations to prevent such incidents in the future.
