Spanish authorities have arrested 19 individuals suspected of involvement in murder and torture following the disappearance of over 50 people from a migrant boat journeying from Senegal to the Canary Islands. The arrests come after police uncovered alarming details regarding the treatment of passengers aboard the vessel, which was intercepted on August 24, 2023, south of Gran Canaria.

According to the Spanish National Police, the wooden boat was carrying approximately 300 migrants when it was rescued, with only 248 survivors remaining on board. Officials suspect that some passengers were branded as “witches,” leading to violent incidents during a harrowing journey that included engine failure, severe weather, and food shortages. Eyewitness accounts revealed that certain individuals began “attacking dozens of people, beating and abusing them in various ways.”

Reports indicate that in some instances, migrants were thrown overboard while still alive, and those who fell into the sea accidentally were denied assistance. The police statement highlighted that suspected killings occurred “simply because some people protested or expressed their dissatisfaction with the conditions of the voyage.” Tragically, one male passenger later died in a hospital after being discovered in serious condition when the authorities intervened.

The migrants on board hailed from several West African countries, including Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau. The suspects are currently in pretrial detention, facing charges that include facilitating irregular immigration, homicide, assault, and torture.

Spain serves as a critical entry point for irregular migration into Europe, especially through the Canary Islands. In 2022, nearly 47,000 migrants reached the archipelago, marking a record for the second consecutive year. However, the Spanish Interior Ministry reported a significant reduction in numbers for the current year.

The arrests and the circumstances surrounding this incident underscore the ongoing challenges faced by migrants attempting to reach Europe, often navigating dangerous and precarious journeys. The plight of those who risk everything for a better life remains a pressing humanitarian concern.
