Search Underway for YouTuber Swept Away by Waterfall in India
Authorities in Odisha, India, are actively searching for 22-year-old YouTuber Sagar Kundu, who was swept away by the powerful currents of Duduma Waterfall while filming a video on August 23, 2023. A viral clip shows Kundu standing at the top of the waterfall before losing his balance and being taken by the water.
The incident occurred during a shoot for several short videos, despite warnings from friends about the dangers posed by the waterfall’s strong current. According to local police, a sudden surge in water flow from the Machkund Dam contributed to Kundu’s precarious situation. Witnesses attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful, as described by Madhusudan Bhoi, inspector in charge at Machkund Police Station.
Ongoing Search Efforts and Challenges
Five days after the incident, the search operation remains ongoing, involving disaster management teams and local firefighters. As of August 27, authorities have reported recovering Kundu’s bag containing camera equipment, which he allegedly discarded moments before being swept away. The challenging terrain, characterized by rugged rocks and continual rainfall, has complicated rescue efforts.
Fire service officer Umesh Chandra Bagh stated that they have requested the authorities overseeing the Machkund Dam to temporarily close its gates to the public. This precaution aims to lower the water level, facilitating ongoing search operations. “Once the water level recedes, it will help us carry out the search operation,” Bagh noted.
The situation highlights the inherent risks associated with extreme filming locations and the importance of adhering to safety precautions. As the community and Kundu’s friends await news, the search efforts continue, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
