PHILADELPHIA, PA — The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) has announced the appointment of elite long-distance runner Sage Canaday as “Coach Canaday” for Team Stop the Clot® in the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon. This high-profile appointment underscores NBCA’s mission to raise awareness and support for blood clot prevention and recovery.

Canaday, renowned for his top finishes in the Boston and New York City Marathons and his success in ultra-marathons worldwide, brings over 15 years of coaching experience through Higher Running and Vo2MaxProductions. His personal story took a dramatic turn in 2021 when he suffered a bilateral pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening condition that forced him into a challenging recovery before returning to competitive running.

“Serving as coach for Team Stop the Clot is a profound honor,” Canaday said. “I run not only for personal achievement but for those who can’t, for those in recovery, and for the memory of those we’ve lost. It’s about turning personal challenges into opportunities to inspire and support others.”

Team Stop the Clot® and Its Mission

His leadership is set to play a vital role in guiding and inspiring Team Stop the Clot® participants, a group of athletes dedicated to raising funds and awareness for NBCA. The organization focuses on preventing blood clots, a condition impacting 900,000 Americans annually and resulting in at least 100,000 premature and preventable deaths.

Dr. Julie Partridge, Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology at Southern Illinois University and Vice Chair of the NBCA Board of Directors, highlighted the importance of this initiative. “Our programs aim to raise awareness about blood clots and provide the necessary resources to support athletes as they recover and regain their strength,” she said. “Sage’s experience and commitment to the cause bring invaluable insight to this effort, and we are thrilled to have him as part of Team Stop the Clot®.”

The Impact of Blood Clots and the Role of Awareness

Blood clots remain a significant health issue in the United States, affecting a large portion of the population and often leading to severe health complications or death if not promptly treated. The NBCA’s efforts to combat this through awareness and education are crucial, and initiatives like Team Stop the Clot® play a pivotal role in spreading these critical health messages.

The announcement comes as the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon, scheduled for November 2, 2025, prepares to showcase thousands of runners. Events like these not only celebrate athletic achievement but also serve as platforms for important health campaigns, amplifying messages that can save lives.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Team Stop the Clot®

The move represents a strategic effort by the NBCA to leverage high-profile events and personalities to further its mission. By appointing a figure like Canaday, who has personally experienced the challenges of blood clots, the organization hopes to inspire both participants and the general public.

Meanwhile, Canaday’s involvement is expected to bring a renewed focus and energy to Team Stop the Clot®, as he draws from his extensive coaching experience and personal journey to motivate and guide the team. His story of resilience and recovery serves as a powerful testament to the potential for overcoming adversity.
